What is the DOT Physical Exam?


The Department of Transportation (DOT) physical is a mandated exam by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). If you’re a commercial driver, you’re required to pass this examination for the safety of yourself and the public. The DOT examination is pretty comprehensive. One of our trained specialists will check your vitals, consider your medical history, and of course, perform a physical exam. During this exam, your eyes, ears, mouth, heart, lungs, nervous system, back, spine, and occasionally other areas will be examined. Upon completion and in the event you pass, you will receive a DOT Medical Card (MEC). This card is what will ensure the validity of your driver’s license to perform your job.

How Do I Know if My Job Requires a DOT Physical Exam?


You must complete a DOT exam if your job meets one of the following criteria:

Operation of a commercial motor vehicle with a gross weight rating of over 10,000 pounds, such as heavy-duty trucks, delivery trucks, and box trucks.

Operation of a motor vehicle that can carry over 15 passengers, such as city buses, trains, or walk-in vans.

Operation of a placarded motor vehicle that transports hazardous materials.
